04 February 2011

SharePoint 2010 is set to make major inroads into the corporate and not-for-profit markets, enabling Microsoft's dream of making SharePoint an enterprise platform for many different information applications and information worker uses. The six key pillars of SharePoint 2010 are: websites; communities, content; search; insights; and composites. (These are more fully explained in an excellent article in CMS WiRE.)

SharePoint 2007, its predecessor, has been implemented by thousands of organisations worldwide. However, MOSS 2007, as it’s known, had huge limitations, including its inability to provide an external web-facing platform. But SharePoint 2010 has changed all this, with critics and fans now agreeing that Microsoft has developed a truly scalable and flexible platform for delivering content to the web.

This will be very important, for example, for many of the Councils that have invested in MOSS 2007, which are under tremendous pressure from the Government to deliver their services in a much more efficient, customer-friendly manner. An upgrade to SharePoint 2010, which includes pushing multiple services out onto the web, seems an obvious route to delivering success.
